Posture
The Best Meditation Posture for Beginners
Good posture makes meditation easier, because a settled body invites a settled mind. The good news: you don’t need to force yourself into a pretzel.
Three postures that work
- Cushion, cross-legged: sit on the front third so hips rise above knees.
- Kneeling (seiza): a bench or cushion takes weight off the ankles.
- Chair: perfectly valid — sit forward, feet flat, back self-supporting.
The one rule that matters
Whatever your base, keep an upright, self-supporting spine — tall but not stiff, like a stack of coins. Let the crown of the head lift gently, ears over shoulders, hands resting in the lap. That’s 90% of good posture.
Small details
Chin slightly tucked, shoulders soft, gaze lowered to the wall. Meet minor discomfort with attention rather than movement, but never endure sharp pain — adjust mindfully. More in the step-by-step guide and meditation at home.
